Making "The Box"
Welcome to The Making of “The Box” section here at Microbudget Movies. Instead of simply telling you some things about movies we’ve made in the past, this time we’re going to take you through the whole process as it unfolds. Hopefully by sharing our experiences, good or bad, you may learn something useful that we might easily have overlooked by simply doing an “after action” report.
Written and directed by Scott Freiheit (Paradise, Earth Women) and produced by Freedom Productions, “The Box” is a surreal, existentialist story about a man who wakes up in a strange room that appears to have no doors and windows and tries to communicate with his unseen captors and the occasional fellow captives that come and go at random intervals. He has no idea why he’s there and only fragmented memories of who he actually is and where he’s supposed to be in “real life.”
The screenplay was originally written on September 27-28, 2004 and got as far as the pre-production phase before Scott Freiheit’s first heart attack caused the project to be shelved. A second attempt in 2006 was accompanied by a second heart attack and the movie went back to collecting dust. On May 17, 2008 “The Box” was “green lighted” again and the ball started rolling once more. Whether it will be a case of “third time’s the charm” or “three strikes and your out” remains to be seen but it should be interesting to watch either way!
Hopefully this section will just continue to grow and grow as the production moves along so please check back often to see what’s new.
